Oditel CarePoint

Summer 2011

Highlights

The quarter has been busy with the community here in Oditel actively involved in harvesting millet, groundnuts and planting sorghum, cassava and sweet potatoes.

On behalf of the community of Oditel, allow me extend our sincere and deep hearted gratitude to the lovely members of River Church for their generous continued support to the community and more so to the vulnerable children in this community. We really appreciate your contribution. We are able to see practically the following changes in the lives of these little children:

  • The children are healthy and look well
  • These children actively and willingly participate in church activities such as praise and worship
  • Their performance at school is greatly improving
  • The children now relate with one another in a friendly and a compassionate manner
  • Personal hygiene for the children is getting better every day. Meaning that, the children are learning to be conscious of their health by choosing good health practices such as brushing their teeth daily, bathing, washing their clothes, and maintaining their hair.

The CarePoint has been progressing well despite a few days when the weather/rains affected attendance at the CarePoint. The children were fed on rice beans, meat, and posho at the CarePoint.

New disciplers

The CarePoint has engaged two volunteers to help in teaching children various aspects. The two volunteers both are students from a Bible college and they include:

  • Sam Jonah Aminu
  • Bosco Ecau

Both Sam and Bosco are not married. They are outgoing and flow very well with children.

Updates on Lessons and Skills

The lessons children were taught this quarter include:

  • The creation story
  • The story of Noah
  • The whole story of Joseph from Genesis chapter 37 to chapter 50
  • The whole story of David, from childhood to kingship.
  • The story of Daniel
  • The birth of Jesus
  • The workers in the Vineyard (Mathew 20: 1-16)
  • The parable of the tenants in the Vineyard (Luke 20)
  • The conversion of Saul to Paul (Acts 9: 1 -5)
  • The new Heaven and the new earth (Revelation 21: 1 - 8)
  • The communication skills

The children attend the CarePoint weekly on Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday during holidays and on Saturdays alone during school days. In addition to the above lessons, children were taught some songs, and fun games.

Special Updates

The children participated in the children’s conference organized by Pentecostal Assemblies of God (PAG) church. They participated in Praise and Worship, serving food to the church members, and welcoming visitors/ushering. All people including the children ate posho and beans, which the church had prepared for all the participants.

The following topics were taught during the conference:

  • Living a purpose driven life
  • How a young man and woman can keep his/her way pure from the book of Psalms 119: 9
  • Having trust in God Psalms 37:10

Besides that, the children were out of school for the short holiday, which has ended on 4 September 2011. While at home the children helped their guardians with domestic work such as washing dishes, cooking, fetching water, and collecting firewood for the girls, and the boys help in taking care of the animals, and garden work. During holidays, children come to the CarePoint for discipleship lessons and praise and worship sessions.

Messages from the children

After interacting with the children they had the following to say in brief:

  • May God bless their sponsors for the support, care and love they have demonstrated by sending them money for food at the CarePoint and also building the CarePoint
  • If their sponsors had not come to their rescue then they would not be in the position they are now in.

Team visits

Oditel this quarter was blessed to have two sponsors visit the CarePoint on different dates. One sponsor (Caitlin) came first on 14 July 2011, and the other, (Kate) came on 11th August 2011. Caitlin since her arrival has been a great blessing to the entire community. She has also been able to blend very well with the community. Caitlin had the following activities to carryout in Oditel:

  • Regular weighing of children at the CarePoint.
  • Volunteering at the health centre

The other sponsor’s stay (Kate) was brief in that, she spent only a few days in Oditel, but all the same it was great moment for her sponsored children Amoding Cecilia and Isarit Kevin. Kate mostly spent time with her sponsored children and also visited the CarePoint.

Work in progress

The Pit - latrine is not yet complete because the water table is very high and to make it worse, it’s a rainy season and this is a real challenge for the children at the CarePoint.

Prayer request
  • Salvation for all the children and their parents/guardians
  • Good health for all the children
  • Security from cattle rustlers
  • Political stability in Uganda
