Magoro CarePoint

in partnership with Our Savior Lutheran Church

Magoro is located in Katakwi District, Eastern Uganda, about 81 kilometers from Soroti city. The town council has seven chapter groups and a population of more than 6,000, primarily engaged in subsistence agriculture. The population is young due to high birth rates and limited access to family planning.

Most households engage in annual cropping, growing cassava and sweet potatoes, and raising livestock. The region has experienced conflict in the last couple of decades, including cattle rustling and issues with the Uganda People’s Liberation Army (UPLA) and the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA), leading to displacement and economic decline.

Challenges include poverty, unstable weather, high illiteracy rates, and food and income insecurity, along with prevalent teenage pregnancies and early marriages. While functional primary schools exist, secondary and vocational training centers are lacking. Two health centers serve more than 25,000 residents from other surrounding areas, facing health issues like malaria, diarrhea, malnutrition, respiratory infections, and HIV.

Magoro CarePoint will be a HopeChest Mega CarePoint and seeks to support more than 600 children across three locations. Children’s HopeChest will be providing educational support, medical support, and small business initiatives to alleviate poverty for children, their caregivers, and the broader community. We will be focusing on sustainable development, starting with children and expanding to the broader community. With the partnership of Our Savior Lutheran Church, the children at Magoro CarePoint have the opportunity to grow physically, spiritually, and emotionally while the Our Savior Lutheran Church community also experiences positive transformation!

Empower a Child at Magoro

Empowering a child is one of the most personal ways that you can make an impact on global poverty. It is more than providing for their physical, emotional, and spiritual needs. When you sponsor a child, you build a relationship that shows that child they are valuable, worth loving, and worth investing in.

Your sponsorship is the starting point of a journey that equips vulnerable children, their families, and their communities to create sustainable transformation. When you sponsor a child with HopeChest, you are not just supporting one child — you are helping transform entire communities.

After checkout, you will be directed to a form where you may either upload or capture a photo of yourself. This photo will be used at the launch event at the CarePoint where the children in the program will select their “HopeChest Friend.” If you missed that step, you can upload a photo here.

HopeChest’s approach to alleviating poverty is asset-based, because we believe that in every place on earth there are resources, not only for surviving, but for thriving and succeeding. Local leaders tell us what they do have instead of what they don’t have, and we walk with them to see their vision for their community come to fruition through development projects.

A fundraiser for Magoro CarePoint is transformational rather than transactional. It promotes empowerment rather than dependence. Your support for these projects will go a long way as, together, we invest in holistic and sustainable solutions that address the root issues of poverty.
