In Uganda, many young people face barriers that make continuing education a challenge, and families frequently rely on inconsistent daily labor to meet basic needs. For many youth, formal education ends early. Without guidance, resources, or opportunities, these young people risk being left behind in communities that need them most.
That’s why Children’s HopeChest is helping change that narrative by equipping young adults with encouragement in education, economic independence, and hope for the future. One story that illustrates this transformation is Patricia.
Growing up in extreme poverty, Patricia, an alumnus of Ogoloi CarePoint, faced challenges that seemed impossible to overcome. Living with her blind father, who was unable to work, the family often survived on just one meal a day. Meeting basic needs was a daily struggle, and school fees were beyond their reach. Patricia was frequently sent home from school and eventually dropped out, leaving her broken and burdened with depression and trauma as her dream of getting an education faded away.
Everything changed in 2009 when Patricia was enrolled in the sponsorship program at Ogoloi CarePoint. Through the faithful support of her sponsor and HopeChest partners, she returned to school and received the opportunity to study from Primary Three through University.
Eventually, Patricia successfully completed her course in secondary education and is now employed as a teacher at Hadassah Christian Secondary School, where she serves as a classroom teacher and instructs 178 students each day. This is very much needed in Uganda, a country where more than 70% of the population is under 30.
Today, Patricia is living a self-reliant and dignified life. Through her monthly income, she can meet her basic needs and provide support for her family. She is also serving at as the Vice Chairperson of the alumni association at the Ogoloi CarePoint and the Secretary of the National Alumni association at HopeChest Uganda.
It is inspiring to see a child’s potential fully realized and pouring into the next generation. Patricia’s leadership in the Ogoloi CarePoint Alumni Group underscores the potential of uniting our alumni around shared core values, spiritual formation, and opportunities to be who God intended them to be.
