Eyob’s Story: From One Computer Lab to a Nation-Changer

Multiply the Hope: As part of our Building Momentum campaign, every dollar you give will be matched—to help create more stories like Eyob’s. Learn More.

When Eyob Tilahun first arrived at Kebron Orphanage in Ethiopia, he was a teenager without family, without resources—and without hope. Like so many vulnerable youth, Eyob didn’t need a miracle. He needed a community.

That community came to life in 2011 through the launch of the Modjo CarePoint, a partnership between local Ethiopian leaders and Children’s HopeChest. There, Eyob found the essentials—food, education, school supplies—and something far more powerful: practical support, spiritual encouragement, and people who believed in him.

“When I joined the CarePoint, everything changed,” Eyob says. “I began to see my life from a new perspective. I felt seen, valued, and loved.”

In 2015, a pivotal opportunity arrived—a small computer lab, funded through the generosity of HopeChest partners, opened at the CarePoint.

“That lab introduced me to the world of technology,” Eyob says. “It reshaped my dreams and gave me the tools to pursue them.”

From a Single Computer to a Nation-Changer

Eyob dove headfirst into learning computer science. With the CarePoint walking alongside him, he earned a university degree in Informatics, grew spiritually through mentoring, and learned to lead others.

Today, Eyob is not only thriving—he’s leading.

  • IT Officer and Graphic Designer at Children’s HopeChest Ethiopia
  • Media Coordinator for the Ethiopian Youth Network, serving 200,000+ youth
  • Digital Advocacy Coordinator at the Center for Development and Governance
  • Web Developer at YagoutPay, a rising East African fintech

At just 27, Eyob is now mentoring the next generation—many of whom sit in front of the very same computers that once opened a door for him.

Why Eyob's Story Matters

Eyob’s story is one example of what’s possible when giving meets real needs identified by the community itself.

This kind of focused support—meeting specific, strategic needs at the right time—is what makes long-term transformation possible. The gift that helped install that computer lab wasn’t random. It was purposeful. It was directed. And it made all the difference.

This June: Let's Keep the Momentum Going

Right now, momentum is building in HopeChest communities around the world—and thanks to a special matching opportunity, your generosity can go twice as far to fuel life-changing stories like Eyob’s.

Thanks to a group of generous partners, every dollar you give will be matched—up to $5,000. Your gift can launch life-changing initiatives like:

  • $16.31 → gives a child in Ethiopia access to a safe public latrine and shower
  • $150 → provides two goats to a hardworking family in Uganda
  • $750 → equips a family in Guatemala with sustainable farming skills and tools
  • Or give any amount—and it will be doubled to create even more impact

Let's Keep Building Momentum—Together

This blog is the first in our Building Momentum series, highlighting how targeted, local-led support is creating lasting transformation in communities across Ethiopia, Guatemala, Uganda, and beyond.
