Celebrating Local Leaders Creating Lasting Change

When Johnson in Uganda worried about feeding his children, hope felt out of reach. Today, he supplies groundnuts across Bukedea, pays school fees on time, and is building a stable home, all because local entrepreneurs like him were given the tools to thrive.

This Giving Tuesday, you can help more leaders turn uncertainty into opportunity.

Johnson in Uganda is Building Stability Through Savings

Before joining a Village Savings and Loan Association (VSLA) through Bukedea CarePoint, Johnson relied on unpredictable day labor. Some weeks, food was scarce, and school fees were delayed.

By joining a VSLA, Johnson learned to save, access small loans, and invest strategically. He started by purchasing groundnuts at harvest and selling them when prices rose. His first profits allowed him to reinvest, and today:

  • He reliably supplies groundnuts across Bukedea and is exploring expansion

  • Pays school fees for his children on time

  • Supports his family and home construction

Give to support leaders like Johnson

  • $25 – Equip one caregiver with financial literacy and business training

  • $60 – Provide training and seed capital for a community member to launch a small business

  • $500 – Boost a full savings group (20+ members) for their first loan cycle

"I didn't know that a person like me could have capital to start a business, but through VSLA and support from Bukedea CarePoint, I now have a running business."

Elsa in Guatemala is Using Her Skills to Serve Her Community

Elsa didn’t start with a business idea. She started with leadership. Through the Guatemala Leadership Academy, she discovered her strengths and created a plan to serve her neighbors.

Phase 2 of the program gave her practical skills: financial literacy, market research, customer service, accounting, and feasibility planning. She turned these lessons into Rapid Tortillas La Bendición, a tortilla business that:

  • Serves her local community with fresh tortillas

  • Generates a net profit of $300 per month, supporting both her business and family

  • Hired two women within six months

Give to support young leaders like Elsa

  • $35 – Equip a parent with training materials for business planning and financial literacy

  • $145 – Provide seed money for a family to launch a small business

  • $290 – Fully support two families with training, mentoring, and startup loans

Abenet in Ethiopia is Rising Through Resilience

At nineteen, Abenet worked long hours in Hossana market just to survive. Without a safe home or support from his parents, education seemed impossible.

Through Hosanna Addis Kidan CarePoint, he first received food, housing, mentorship, and emotional support. Once stabilized, he launched a small market shop selling staple goods.

  • Low-risk, high-turnover products created steady cash flow

  • Regular savings allowed him to plan for the future

  • Next goal: returning to school

Abenet’s story shows a key truth. Economic empowerment works best when paired with relational support and immediate needs care.

Give to empower families like Abenet’s

  • $580 – Help four families graduate from training with resources to start businesses

  • $1,000 – Support seven families with loans and mentoring follow-up

  • $2,500 – Empower 17+ families to lift themselves out of poverty through business ownership

Why These Stories Matter

Across HopeChest CarePoints, small businesses are creating pathways out of chronic vulnerability

  • Locally led solutions: Communities identify their own needs and drive development

  • Savings-based finance: VSLAs reduce vulnerability and build resilience

  • Skills and leadership development: Training plus mentoring increases success

  • Holistic support: Meeting physical, emotional, and relational needs produces stronger outcomes

  • Income diversification: Small businesses strengthen households and ripple across communities

When families have tools, trust, and consistent support, hope becomes measurable and sustainable
