There was a time when Michael wondered whether he would ever finish school.
Growing up in a humble household with his single mother and four siblings, he understood the realities of poverty from an early age. His mother worked tirelessly to provide for the family, but limited income made it difficult to afford food, school requirements, and other basic necessities.As financial pressure mounted, Michael grew increasingly uncertain about his future. Staying in school became more difficult each year, and he began to wonder whether he would ever complete his education.
Around him, some of his peers left school to help support their families through hunting and other activities. Faced with the same challenges, Michael questioned whether he would soon have to leave the classroom behind as well.
At a critical moment, Michael joined Ngariam CarePoint in Uganda.
Through sponsorship, Michael gained access to school fees, scholastic materials, meals, and other essentials, allowing him to attend school consistently and focus on learning. Along the way, he also received encouragement to grow in his faith, character, confidence, and sense of purpose.
Michael embraced the opportunity before him.
He successfully completed his Ordinary Level education, demonstrating both dedication and potential. As he continued to work hard and pursue his goals, Children’s HopeChest supported him through a primary teacher-training course, helping him take the next step toward his future.
Slowly, the future Michael had nearly given up on began to take shape.
Today, Michael is a qualified government-paid teacher serving students in a school within his district.
Years ago, he sat in a classroom wondering whether poverty would force him to leave school behind. Today, he stands at the front of one.
The education he once feared losing has become the foundation of his future and the tool he now uses to invest in others. Every lesson he teaches and every child he encourages is an opportunity to provide the same hope and encouragement that helped shape his own journey.
“The support I received gave me the opportunity to continue my education and believe in my future,” said Michael. “Today, I am a teacher, and I am grateful that I now have the opportunity to give other children the hope and encouragement I once needed.
Michael’s story is about more than earning a teaching certificate.
It is the story of a young man who seized an opportunity to stay in school and turned it into a future. The support that once helped him remain in the classroom now reaches countless students through the work he does each day.
